A modern car has dozens of control units (ECUs) — each responsible for a specific function: engine, transmission, ABS, Airbag, comfort systems and more. These units constantly "talk" to each other over an internal network.
How a diagnostic scanner works
A diagnostic device connects to the car's OBD port and reads the status of each module — whether there's a fault, what values the sensors are showing in real time, and generally how the system is "feeling."
A fault code is just a starting point
It's important to understand that a fault code by itself isn't a final diagnosis — it's a pointer. An experienced specialist compares the code against real sensor data and the car's behavior to work out the exact cause.
Why regular diagnostics is worth it
Computer diagnostics isn't only useful when there's already a problem — it's also useful for prevention and for pre-purchase checks, since many faults don't show a noticeable symptom yet.
